My View on Politics

I'm proud to be an American. Yet, in recent months and years, I have become angry at the turns our nation is taking. The politicians we vote for are betraying us. Instead of representing the people who vote them in, they are giving in to corporations and special interest groups.

I do pay attention to the news, but found politics boring, becoming apathetic like many people. Not any more. Since the election of 2000 I've been exploring my political beliefs more. The election of President Bush left a sour taste in my mouth and a cold feeling in the pit of my stomach. It led me to pay more attention to politics and events going on in our country and the world. I plan to put more of my opinions on politics in this journal. There are things happening now that I do not like, that none of us should like. So, I'm going to start writing my perceptions about issues and the way our nation should be going in this journal starting today. Some people who read this journal may agree and some won?t. That?s okay. We do live in a free country.

First, a little more about me to understand where I'm coming from in my opinions. I'm 48, single, never married and had no children. An only child, I was adopted and grew up in a loving family. I'm native born and Caucasian though my parents are Mexican Americans. I do believe in God, considering myself a Christian, but not belonging to any organized group. I work as an instructional assistant for Special Education at a high school. My family could be considered middle class, but not rich. I live in the Bay Area of northern California. I do have a college education. I'm a registered Democrat and consider myself a moderate liberal with some of my opinions on certain issues falling on the conservative side.

These are the political issues important to me:

A universal health care system for all.

Stopping or slowing all immigration for security since U.S doesn't need the population growth.

Pro-choice for women.

Corporations should pay a tax on profits for doing business here, but putting Americans out of work by shipping jobs overseas.

Fix the social security system for senior citizens.

Fix the Medicare system for senior citizens.

Welfare should only be paid to those working poor who work. Women that want to stay home and raise kids should be required to be on some kind of birth control to receive benefits.

Bring the deficit under control.

Continue fighting the war on terror.

Regulate the health care industry if not universal system.

Protect the rights of citizens not corporations or special interests.

Gun control because the public can't be trusted with weapons.

These are just a few of the issues I see as important right now and plan to write about in this journal. I'm sure I'll come up with more as new things come to me.

Here's to our great nation. May it last a long time.
