President’s State of Union Speech 2006

What did I hear in President Bush’s speech? I heard us moving closer to a nation ruled by greedy, uncaring people who don’t care about others as long as they have money and live a high quality of life. Conservatism isn’t less government, it’s a society ruled by the law of the jungle. I didn’t hear the president say, “Let’s work toward a day when all poverty is eliminated from America.” All he proposes would just make it impossible for people to live comfortable lives.

Bush talked about social security and Medicare again, saying how the retiring Baby Boomers are going to put a drain on the government in next 20 or more years. First of all as a Baby Boomer, I resent this. Why blame us? We had no choice when we were born. How is that our fault? Conservatives see this as a way to eliminate social security and Medicare. After all, the well off don’t want to pay taxes for old people. Let them die off. That eliminates them and leaves more money for the rich.

On health care, he doesn’t propose any new way to bring down the high costs of it. There were no calls to regulate the insurance or pharmaceutical companies. There’s no proposal to make health care available to all Americans rich or poor. Put health care in as a universal right and humanitarian need, not a for profit business. Again, jungle law comes into play. Let the sick and poor die. Only those with money are entitled to live and get quality medical care.

For energy, it’s more of the same old same old. Bush states that America is addicted to oil. What does he propose? I don’t hear him ordering car companies to manufacture cars with better engines. Or, telling scientists to find better alternative fuels or improve the use of renewable energy. If we could get away from needing oil, it would reduce the need to interfere in the Middle East and leaving the Moslems of that part of the to fall back into whatever way they want to live. They would leave us alone since we won’t need them any more.

Finally, Bush declared his domestic spying program was justified because of terrorism. I agree that we need to have strong security, but why can’t the president obey the law. Such arrogant attitudes lead to abuse of power. Who will he and other politicians spy on next? Antiwar protest groups? Those of us who state opinions that go against the president and his followers? The people shouldn’t forget that we can’t allow our constitution be torn apart because of Sept. 11. Our country could end up with a dictatorship instead of a democracy.

I didn’t hear anything new in the State of the Union address. Just more playing on the fears of the people and catering to the wealthy corporations and people of this country. Our rights and freedoms are being trampled on by a group of politicians and people that want to control the people so they can get more money for themselves. I hope that the people of our country start paying attention to this administration, think about what is happening and start speaking out. If not, we’re going to lose a lot of our freedoms and possibly become a dictatorship.
