My Opinion of Conservatives

I’m tired of right wing conservatives making accusations that liberals are unpatriotic, whiners, irreligious and other things. Liberal is not a dirty word. I’m a moderate liberal, but conservative on some issues. I do believe government should help improve the lives of people. Government should spur innovation and push companies to create good paying jobs for Americans, provide health care for all and many other things.

The conservatives have been in power for eight years. Look where their policies have gotten us. Rising gas prices. Rising food prices. Tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations with no relief for the middle and working classes. Rising crime rates from desperate people. No health care for many people. Pensions disappearing. Jobs disappearing over seas or reduced to minimum wage level. People losing homes. So, I’m going to give my opinion on how I see conservatives.

I’ve come to the conclusion that conservatives are driven by three attitudes which harm other people and undermine the American way of life. Whether political or social conservatives, they are driven by greed, selfishness and a need to tell other people what to do.

First, conservatives are driven by greed. Conservatives want less government in people’s lives. Most conservatives tend to be from wealthy families or big businesses. Of course they don’t want government in their lives. Without regulation and protections for people, they're free to pursue their greed without answering to anyone. They don’t want watch dogs on them. They don’t want to pay their fair share in taxes as recently demonstrated by the release of information of how many rich people hide their money in foreign banks to avoid taxes. Tax loop holes favor corporations and the rich while everyone else pays heavier taxes.

Next, conservatives are driven by selfishness. It’s fine for them when they have the means to live extravagant, comfortable lives, but when someone suggests a service or idea to help people, they don’t want it. Why? Because they would have to pay for it. Conservatives have an “I’ve got mine, to hell with you” attitude. Selfishness sets in and they don’t care about other people. An example of this is the health care crisis. Millions of people have lost their health insurance and others can’t afford it. This has occurred because corporations are being allowed to drop insurance to make bigger profits. Insurance companies, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies are being allowed to raise their prices exorbitantly without any government oversight to stop them. When politicians move to try to help people with a universal health care system, the conservatives start screaming words like socialism and health care is not a right but a privilege. They don’t care who suffers or dies as long as they don’t have to pay for it. Another example is the desire of conservatives to destroy the social security system. They claim its a drain and is going to run out of money. They want people to have it privatized. They just want to get away from paying into the system for other people because of selfishness.

Finally, conservatives thrive on telling people what to do and how to live their lives. For a group that believes in noninterference from the government, they sure are vocal about wanting to control other people. An example is the abortion issue. Social conservatives want Roe vs. Wade overturned and take away a woman’s right to choose. A woman should be free to make that choice on her own. Women don’t need men, the government or a bunch of religious fanatics telling them what to do with their bodies. The antiabortion crowd just want to have control over women’s bodies to keep them under men’s power. Conservatives also want to prevent gay people from getting married or having other rights. So much for staying out of people’s lives.

I’ve come to dislike conservatives and their philosophy. Most conservatives are greedy, selfish and dictatorial. They are ruining the economy, undermining the U.S. constitution and trying to drive our nation back into the past where only the privileged have rights and protections. We are in the 21st century. Our country should be moving toward a bright future for all people with more rights and protections against those who take advantage of us, not backward into the 18th century.
