Polls

Polls say one candidate is up and the other down. They say how popular or unpopular a politician is. They tell us how people feel about different issues. One thing needs to be remembered. Polls aren’t always accurate or depict what every single person in the country believes. Polls can change on a daily basis depending on how people feel, what they hear or what's happening in their lives that day. There is a margin for error in all polls. I don’t believe a small sampling of people reflects everyone in the country.

One poll taken in the past few years is that people feel our country is on the wrong track. I’m curious and worried about what track they think we should be on. Is it a path to a brighter future for all or a path into the past? One path leads toward hope and the other to darkness.

First, the scary path. This path leads into a drift into the past with less rights for people and erosion of the American dream. It seems some people want to go back in time to the early 1900s or before. Religious fundamentalists are pushing to take away a woman’s right to choose, restrict the civil rights of gay people and want religious ideas taught in public schools. They seem to want a society driven by social Darwinism where the rich get wealthier and the rest of the people need to survive by the law of the jungle. They seem to want a government with only a military and nothing else. They want workers without unions, protections, benefits and low paying jobs, so corporations can get obnoxiously richer. They want to finish destroying the environment because they only care about now and not future generations. This path leads to the end of freedoms, democracy and hope.

Now, for the path to a brighter future. Things this future would include should be to better the lives of people. There should be health care for everyone whatever their social class. Our country should put more effort into better education for everyone and not try to dumb down the population. There should be more higher paying jobs for workers with benefits like it used to be. We need laws protecting the people from greedy big business. This future should have sustainable, renewable sources of energy while protecting the environment. There should be an end to poverty because in a rich country like ours there should be none. The American dream should be attainable to everyone, not just the wealthy. Politicians should represent the people that vote for them not corporate interests and lobbyists. These are a few of the many things for a bright future.

I hope the wrong track polls mean that people want to change from darkness and move to a betert track. With the presidential election coming, I think we should vote for the Democratic candidate. He may not be an FDR, but let’s give him a chance. Eight years of Republican rule has driven us into darkness with an economy in shambles, a growing divide between rich and poor, job losses and a costly, unnecessary war. The Republican candidates only offer more of the same and are warmongers. Here’s to a brighter future!
