Why I could never support Governor Palin
This blog entry is not from the point of view of a Democrat or a Republican, a liberal or a conservative. Today I speak as a woman. I applaud both parties for having viable women candidates this year. Hillary Clinton would have been a good president. Governor Palin seems to be a smart, intelligent woman along with being a wife and mother. As a woman, I could not support her as a candidate though. From what I’ve heard about and from her, she is not a supporter of women’s rights.
First, she is against abortion in any form and wants to see Roe vs. Wade overturned. She is entitled to her own personal opinions and beliefs on abortion, however she does not support a woman’s right to choose not even in cases of rape or incest. That’s not right. It’s fine for her to make her own personal choices, but not right for her or anyone else to make that choice for other women. No one should tell anyone what to do with their bodies. I can’t support any woman who won’t support the right to choose.
Another reason I couldn’t support this woman is because of her views on foreign policy. She seems to believe war is the solution to dealing with problems. A person that doesn’t believe in diplomacy first is dangerous. I won’t support someone who would involve us in more wars and get more of our young people killed.
Next, Governor Palin doesn’t support worker's rights. She’s against collective bargaining. This hurts women in the work force. It will keep them from equal pay for equal work. Her view follows the current Republican views of letting the private sector do as it wants. This leads to further erosion of the rights of workers including women.
These are just a few of the many reasons why I couldn’t support Governor Palin. A female candidate should have strong support for women’s rights and not try to set back the work of feminists a hundred years. She should not want to impose her beliefs and opinions on others or promote the removal of rights for women or any other group. There will be a woman president some day but this woman should never be the one.
